The system

The Old Mutual Design System (OMDS) is the shared foundation for Old Mutual’s digital products. I work on its master component library and on the patterns product teams build with.

Each component is designed for web, iOS and Android, built on shared foundations: elevation, illustration, iconography, photography, pictograms, layout, logo and typography.

Components across platforms

Components such as the accordion ship as separate web, iOS and Android variants, sharing a common slot utility so content can change without breaking the component. Work moves through branches and is marked ready for dev only once it’s documented.

Product tour pattern

For the app, I defined how in-app product tours should behave: when a tour appears, its anatomy and variants, and the rules that stop it from becoming noise.

  • Show a tour once per feature, and only when the feature is relevant.
  • Never show the same tour twice in one session.
  • Treat a dismissal as an explicit signal, and don’t resurface it.
  • Cap interruptions at one feature-discovery tour per session.
